On this solemn anniversary of the 7 October attacks and kidnappings in Israel, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) stands in solidarity with all those who continue to suffer from the violence and its aftermath. We remember the lives lost, those still missing, and the countless families and communities who endure ongoing pain and uncertainty.
ICN welcomes the renewed peace negotiations in the Middle East and urges all parties on both sides of the conflict to seize this opportunity to end the cycle of violence and build a future founded on justice, dignity, and mutual respect. Peace is not only possible, it is essential for the health and well-being of all people.
In line with the recent resolution by ICN’s governing body unequivocally condemning attacks on health care personnel, we once again call for the protection of nurses and all health workers in conflict zones. Targeting, threatening, or obstructing health personnel and facilities is a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). ICN demands that IHL be upheld and enforced in all conflict settings, including Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and elsewhere. We also condemn the targeting of any people based on their religious or political beliefs.
ICN continues to campaign for peace, solidarity, and support for nurses working amid violence and instability through its #NursesforPeace campaign. This global movement amplifies the voices of nurses on the front lines, advocates for their protection, and calls on governments and international bodies to ensure that health and humanitarian principles are respected in all circumstances.
Nurses everywhere continue to uphold humanity in the darkest of times. The international community must match their courage and compassion with decisive action by ensuring respect for international law, safeguarding health care in conflict, and pursuing lasting peace.
