Leading nurse academic Linda Aiken, whose research proves having more, better qualified nurses saves lives, to speak at ICN’s 2019 Congress in June

Geneva, Switzerland; 21 March 2019 - The latest high-profile speaker confirmed for this year’s International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress is Dr Linda Aiken. Dr Aiken’s research has established a link between the proportion of qualified nurses on wards and positive outcomes for patients.

ICN Congress, one of the largest gatherings of nurses in the world, will be held between 27 June and 1 July in Singapore. An exciting programme of speakers and events will address key issues affecting the world’s health and the nursing professions.

Linda Aiken

Dr Linda H. Aiken is a renowned nurse academic whose research into nurse staffing levels has had a widespread impact around the world. She is the Claire Fagin Professor of Nursing, Professor of Sociology, Director of Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, and Senior Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. Her research, in more than 30 countries, focuses on the use of performance measures to demonstrate relationships between the proportion of more highly qualified nursing staff on wards and patient outcomes. She is an elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a former President of the American Academy of Nursing, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing.

Dr Aiken will run a planery session at the ICN 2019 Congress on Safe Staffing together with Dr Matthew D. McHugh.

Matthew McHugh

Dr Matthew D. McHugh is the Independence Chair for Nursing Education and Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr McHugh is Associate Director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at Penn where he conducts health services and policy research focusing on the impact of nurses and nursing on patient outcomes, quality of care, and costs. He is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar, a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics.

Claudia Hernandez

Claudia Leija Hernández has been the Chief Nursing Officer of Mexico’s Ministry of Health since 2016. She is a member of the Mexican Society of Cardiology, and a member of Government Board of the Council of the National Academy of Nurses. Ms. Leija has worked in the National Institute of Cardiology of Mexico and is a board member of the Mexican Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and the Mexican College of Nursing Graduates.

Nester Edwards

Nester Edwards is the Chief Nursing Officer in Grenada. She currently serves on many committees within the Ministry of Health, Social Security and International Business, and other government Ministries. She has a keen interest in health policy and human resources in health and has worked very closely with regional and international organisations in the review and development of policies for the Ministry of Health. Miss. Edwards has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the St. George’s University, Grenada.

ICN received over 4,300 abstract submissions for its 2019 Congress. Each abstract was reviewed by an expert panel of reviewers and 599 of the highest quality has been selected for oral concurrent sessions and a further 1,547 for poster presentations and 483 will be available as e-posters.
