The Centre for Information Systems Research and Development of Porto Nursing School, University of Porto – Portugal (CIDESI-ESEP) is an institutional innovation and knowledge transfer centre dedicated to the development, implementation, adoption and enhancement of knowledge assets, methodologies and digital solutions in the field of Nursing Information Systems. The Centre bridges the gap between scientific knowledge and its application in education, clinical practice, management and information systems development, promoting semantic interoperability, health information standardization and the digital transformation of nursing.
As an ICN Accredited Centre, CIDESI-ESEP contributes to the development, implementation and international adoption of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) and its integration within SNOMED CT, while supporting the evolution of nursing terminology, knowledge representation and international reference models for Nursing Information Systems.
CIDESI-ESEP operates in alignment with the mission and strategic objectives of the Porto School of Nursing, University of Porto (ESEP) and in close collaboration with the Portuguese Nurses Association (Ordem dos Enfermeiros – OE), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), SNOMED International and other national and international organizations. Through its accreditation, the Centre provides the institutional framework through which ESEP contributes to international initiatives related to ICNP®, Nursing Information Systems and Digital Health.
The Centre currently includes 19 permanent faculty members, all registered nurses with diverse clinical and academic expertise. The Centre also hosts doctoral students and visiting researchers whose work contributes to the development and implementation of its knowledge assets, methodologies and digital solutions.
CIDESI-ESEP has developed NursingOntos, a multilingual nursing ontology designed to support knowledge representation and semantic interoperability, and e4nursing, a multilingual web-based educational platform supporting nursing clinical reasoning and care planning. The Centre also provides consultancy, technical support, education and capacity-building activities, while actively participating in international collaborative initiatives dedicated to the development, implementation and adoption of ICNP, SNOMED CT and other international standards supporting Nursing Information Systems and Digital Health.
