Supporting nursing around the world through the use of a common language: From bedside data to nursing information around the world

Prof Ernesto Morais, CIDESI – ESEP Portugal

ICN believes that information and communication technology must be used in health care to bring scientific knowledge and well-informed practice to individuals, families and communities with health-related needs. The goals of the ICN eHealth Programme are to support eHealth practice, to be recognised as an authority on eHealth, and to be positioned centrally in the eHealth community. With policies and strategies applicable throughout the work of ICN as well as external partnerships, the ICN eHealth programme seeks to advance nurses’ knowledge of and involvement in eHealth worldwide.

The International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) is an international nursing terminology standard that facilitates the description and comparison of nursing practice locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. ICNP serves a critical role in representing the domain of nursing practice worldwide, supporting evidence-based quality care.

Since 2020, ICNP has been integrated into SNOMED CT, the international health terminology platform managed by SNOMED International. Users in SNOMED International member countries can access ICNP through their national release centre, in accordance with their country's membership. For users in non-member countries, a separate access process applies, managed by ICN.
