Today, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) launched two posters as part of its array of resources in its countdown to International Nurses Day (IND) on 12 May.

With the theme “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A Vision for Future Healthcare”, IND 2021 lays out a vision for future healthcare and shows how putting nurses in positions of influence and power will lead to more people-centred and integrated approaches to healthcare, and, consequently, more positive outcomes for the people and communities that nurses serve.

Available, in English, French and Spanish, the posters represent the diverse work nurses do in different settings around the world. The photographs selected for the posters were submitted to the IND 2021 photo contest by Lakpa Chhoeky Sherpa from Nepal and the Foundation for the Development of Nursing (Fuden) in Spain.

Howard Catton, ICN Chief Executive Officer, said:

“These IND resources show the innovative solutions nurses bring to the table. Nurses can be at the forefront of new models of care and new ways of working. This pandemic has shown that nurses are flexible, reactive, innovative and creative. It is time for governments to invest in this vital resource to build better prepared, more resilient health systems for the future.”

The posters are part of a range of resources that ICN has produced for International Nurses Day. Theses include case studies from nurses across the globe, fact sheets and policy briefs, and an IND report which will be launched on 12 May.

ICN wants the voice of nursing to be heard around the globe, to spread the word about this great profession and how it contributes to the health of populations. As skilled and knowledgeable carers, healers, educators, leaders and advocates, nurses are fundamental to the provision of safe, accessible and affordable care. Through these IND resources, ICN uses the authentic voices of the world’s nurses to showcase the work of this wonderful, innovative and vital profession.

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. ICN commemorates this important day each year with the production and distribution of IND resources and evidence. #IND2021
