The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has published its report on this year’s World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting, which was held virtually at the World Health Organization’s (WHO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, between May 24 and June 1.

ICN is in special relations with WHO and continues to work collaboratively with it on many topics and projects of mutual interest.

ICN had a virtual delegation of more than 50 nurses from 45 different countries at the Assembly, which adopted the new Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery (2021-2025) and discussed in detail WHO’s Human Resources Strategy and its COVID-19 work.

The ICN delegation ensured that the nursing voice was heard loud and clear at the Assembly, and they will now take their reports of the discussions and decisions that took place there back to their National Nursing Associations so that they can be fed into their national nursing policies. The report includes ICN’s interventions on four items of particular concern to nurses:

  • COVID-19
  • The Immunisation Agenda 2030
  • The Health Workforce
  • Social Determinants of Health.
