The Global Nursing Leadership Institute (GNLI) 2018 Policy Programme will be held at Château de Bossey

Policy and politics determine the health of populations, and the future of the nursing profession. At local, regional, national and international levels, policy and politics, profoundly shape the practice of nursing and the environments where nurses work. Nurse leaders everywhere must gain the right professional, political and policy leadership skills to operate effectively in tough policy arenas.

ICN is offering nurse leaders the opportunity to learn how to maximize their contribution to shaping, influencing and implementing policy decisions through the GNLI 2018 Policy Programme.

Thirty carefully selected nurse leaders from round the world will attend a one-week residential programme in Geneva. 7-14 September 2018, and complete two modules of preparation and follow-up work before and after.

Working with internationally respected facilitators and speakers, and with access to on-line policy resources and tailor-made materials, participants will enjoy further networking opportunities after the programme, and become more engaged with ICN and other global health leaders.

This innovative programme, positioned within the framework of nursing opportunities in a world focused on sustainable development, focuses on the foundations of policy understanding and influence. It aims to increase the capacity of nurse leaders to work for better health outcomes and quality of care while safeguarding the safety, well-being and socio-economic interests of all health workers.  Participants will engage with experts and colleagues using stimulating and supportive action-learning methods to gain confidence and competence in framing issues, analysing policy contexts and processes, and building coalitions inside and outside healthcare.

The following themes, and more, will be explored:

  • How to use your unique perspectives, interests and expertise to influence policy discussions.
  • How to enhance your competence in negotiating at the highest levels with government officials, international and nongovernmental organizations and fellow executives.
  • How to frame the evidence base within your local, national and international political, health and social care contexts, and use it to create clear messages that will appeal to politicians, policy-makers and the public.
  • How to identify, understand and work with stakeholders within and beyond the profession.

GNLI 2018 builds on ICN’s impressive legacy of working with senior nurses from around the world to increase their leadership understanding and expertise. Supported by the Burdett Trust for Nursing, it continues the sequence of Global Nursing Leadership Institute programmes that began in 2009.

Applications are welcomed from senior nurses in positions of potential policy influence, including government chief nurses, directors of nursing services in the public and independent health sectors, university deans, heads of research, senior officials of national nursing associations, expert practitioners, and senior nurses in intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations.
