      • After a four year probation period, the Institute for Nursing Research and Practice of the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre. On 12 January 2016, WHO Director General Dr Margaret Chan appointed ICN Board member, Professor Jürgen Osterbrink, as Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research and Education with a focus on Health Care Research in particular on Palliative Care.

From 22-23 February, the National Nurses Association of El Salvador will host the first Central American summit of ICN members of ICN, along with the XXII International Congress.  Judith Shamian, ICN President, and Frances Hughes, ICN CEO, will speak on the Nursing contribution in national and regional health governance.



World Health Professions Alliance

ICN is a founding member of the World Health Professions Alliance, which brings together the global organisations representing the world’s dentists, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists and physicians and speaks for more than 26 million health care professionals in more than 130 countries. WHPA works to improve global health and the quality of patient care and facilitates collaboration among the health professions and major stakeholders.
The WHPA holds an annual professional and international conference on the regulation of health professionals. It has published core competencies for health consultants, joint guidelines on incentives for the retention and recruitment of health professionals,  and joint statements on: task shifting; HIV/AIDS; promotion and protection of human rights; mental health: tobacco and many other health issues.
WHPA advocates for appropriate investments in the education and capacity building of health professionals to detect counterfeits and to safely inform colleagues and patients.
