Why a Network?
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) acknowledges that a significant proportion
of the world’s population lives in areas of low population density
in large land masses. Nurses make a major contribution to the health
of these people and are often the first, if not the only, point of contact
with the health care system for people living in rural and remote areas. Even
in developed countries health systems are often not well placed to meet the
health needs of these people or the professional needs of the nurses who
care for them.
ICN is keen to support the work of nurses in rural and remote areas
and to promote opportunities for exchange of ideas and expertise. ICN
was pleased to respond to a proposal by the International Federation
of Remote and Rural Nurses to establish the ICN Rural and Remote Nurses
Network (ICN-RRNN)
What will the network do?
The network will be an evolving and dynamic resource that will:
provide a global forum for addressing issues related to rural
and remote nurses and nursing,
promote sound global rural and remote nursing practice,
provide opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and experience to develop
the science and practice of rural and remote nursing,
organise meetings and conferences. |
Communication between network members and others will be facilitated
in a variety of ways including through the ICN website, the online
Bulletin Board, the introduction of a regular network bulletin and
through meetings and conferences.
Membership
Membership of the network is open to nurses and others who are interested in
the development of nursing in rural and remote areas.
