ICN Announces Position Geneva, 31 October 2002 - New nursing roles are emerging rapidly worldwide. To facilitate a common understanding and guide further development of these important roles, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has developed a definition and characteristics for the Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). “Interest in NP/APN roles has grown tremendously as countries seek innovative health care options for the populations of the world,” said Madrean Schober, chair and coordinator for the ICN International NP/APN Network. “Nurses are present in most health care settings, and provide competent, approachable and accessible health care services. ICN is keen to advance nursing practice in ways that contribute directly to improving health care,” she continued. The ICN Board of Directors has approved the following definition:
The next step will be the development of scope of practice and standards related to advanced nursing roles. These guidelines are being developed by the Network’s health policy subgroup. ICN established its International Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nursing Network in 2000. It provides an international resource for nurses, policymakers, educators, regulators, health planners and other interested individuals. Its next conference takes place October 31 – November 2 in Adelaide, Australia. An official ICN position paper describing the definition and characteristics
for nurse practitioner/advanced practice nursing roles is available at
