Internationally Educated Nurse Registration Research

Postby cgiblin » 28 Apr 2016, 19:52

The College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) in Canada recently completed a five year research project investigating whether there were characteristics of internationally educated nurse (IEN) applications that were related to success or challenges in the IEN application for registration process. The study also analyzed process timelines and competency assessment results in relation to the overall registration process. Findings from a baseline data analysis of over 3,500 IEN applications received at CARNA over four years, served as evidence which informed policy and practice changes that were implemented at CARNA in August 2013. A subsequent quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the changes showed that the IEN application for registration process had become more evidence-informed, efficient and transparent. Information about the study, including project reports and tools, can be found at http://www.nurses.ab.ca/lfe.
