The purpose of this study was to review the term and definition “dignified dying”, as used in nursing practice. To improve communication and quality of nursing care, there is a need for a common language for nursing practice. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has published a Beta Version of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) to encourage testing of nursing concepts in practice. One of the terms in the ICNP is “dignified dying”. The results of this study will be shared with ICN for ongoing development of the ICNP. As an international study, nurses from select English-speaking countries (e.g. Australia, Botswana, and USA) and countries where many nurses speak English (e.g. Pakistan) will be asked to participate. A survey method will be used. The survey includes a list of characteristics. Subjects will be asked to indicate the degree to which the characteristics are representative of the term “dignified dying”, using a 5-point scale. The survey also provides items for subjects to list nursing interventions, which they use to promote “dignified dying” in practice. To assure confidentiality of responses, findings will be reported in an aggregate form. Quantitative and qualitative analysis will be used. The Fehring Diagnostic Content Validity (DCV) model will be used to examine the representatives of various characteristics or diagnostic criteria for “dignified dying”. In addition, quantitative analysis will include descriptive statistics and inferential statistics as appropriate to examine variation among countries. Qualitative thematic analysis will include identification of major themes and categories in the open-ended survey items.
