  • Abstract
Nursing care is a data, judgment, plan and an evaluation-intensive process, which can be well helped by using appropriate Information Technology (IT) tools and building suitable management support systems. However IT tools and systems would not function well if their interfaces could not be designed to be friendly and easy to use. This project is intended to develop an integrated interface platform with multi-modals, such as voice, touch-screen enabled data entry facilities and graphic-based outputs, to facilitate the interaction between the systems and users. We intend to use the ICNP as the base for nursing assessment and the representation of nursing planning. The research team includes 4 experienced nurse leaders and 3 IT professionals. The testing site will be the ICU Taipei nursing care center, a teaching hospital with 2800 beds. Systems will be developed to support the nursing assessment and planning for ICU nurses. We will develop systems using VB 6.0 on tablet or touch-screen PCs with Windows 2000. IBM’s Voice Server Chinese version will be used to develop voice-recognized systems. We will use Davis’ TAM (Technology Assessment Model) to evaluate nurses’ acceptance of systems. A set of criteria, such as time to complete data entry, easiness of operation, correctness of data entry, between the old and new systems will also be developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the systems. 40 nurses in the ICU nursing care center will be recruited for this study.
