The Medical Professional Education Centre (MPIC) was founded in 1994. At this time the Ministry of Welfare of the Republic of Latvia issued an order to reorganize the Training School of the Ministry of Welfare into the MPIC in order to:
- improve the health care of population,
- organize and coordinate medical practitioners with secondary professional basic education and postgraduate training, and
- Register persons with secondary specialised medical school education authorized to praxis.
The MPEC has good relationships with medical institutions and practitioners, employees, educators of medical practitioners, professional associations, agencies, centres and societies. The Medical Professional Education Centre is an administrative body under the Ministry of Health. Subordinate legislation and regulations of the Cabinet Ministers the MPIC regulate the education, registration and practice of nurses and midwives.
