  • Health System

    Uganda has a population of 28.8 million. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that life expectancy in Uganda in 2004 was 48 years for males and 51 years for females and the main causes of death are HIV/AIDS, malaria, lower respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases, perinatal conditions, and tuberculosis.

    The infant mortality rate per 1000 lives births was 81 (both sexes); the under 5 mortality rate per 1000 live births was 138 (both sexes); and the maternal mortality rate per 100,000 live births was 880.

    Total expenditure on health is 7.3% of GDP. General Government expenditure on health as percentage of total government expenditure was 10.7%, private expenditure on health as a percentage of total expenditure on health was 69.6%.
