    The Swaziland Nursing Council is an autonomous body established by the Nurses and Midwives Act, No. 16 of 1965. The Swaziland Nursing Council is committed to the promotion of professional excellence and quality nursing care, protection of the public trust by ensuring that nurses who wish to practice nursing in the kingdom of Swaziland are eligible and qualified to meet licensure and other practice requirement.
    Powers of the Council are to:
    • Regulate Nursing Practice and nursing education to enforce provision of the Act
    • Develop, adopt and amend rules and regulations
    • Interpret the Act
    • Inquire and discipline registrants and enrolled persons
    • Set up committees for the purpose of carrying out work of the Council
    • Established a board for the purpose of prescribing and conducting nursing examinations for licensure

  • Health System
    Swaziland has a population just over one million. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that life expectancy in Swaziland in 2004 was 36 years for males and 39 years for females and the main causes of death are HIV/AIDS, lower respiratory infections, and tuberculosis.

    Infant mortality per 1000 lives births was 102 (both sexes); under 5 mortality per 1000 live births was 156 (both sexes); and maternal mortality per 100,000 live births was 370.

    Total expenditure on health is 5.8% of GDP. General Government expenditure on health as percentage of total government expenditure was 10.9%, private expenditure on health as a percentage of total expenditure on health was 42.7%.

    Development goals have been set by the Swaziland government to improve health outcomes for the population.
