The Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV) is established under the
Health Professionals Registration Act 2005, it is an independent, self-funding statutory authority. In Victoria, there are twelve health practitioner registration boards that operate under the Health Professionals Registration Act. The primary purpose of the Health Professionals Registration Act 2005 is to protect the public by providing for the registration of suitably qualified health practitioners, the investigation of the conduct and fitness to practise of registered health practitioners and the issue of guidelines and standards relevant to the profession.
In regulating the profession, the NBV registers nurses and requires an annual renewal of their licence. Only nurses registered by the NBV are entitled to use the term 'registered nurse' in this State. The NBV accredits nursing programs in universities and VET institutions, approve programs by other educational providers and set the standards and guidelines for nursing practice. The NBVs complaints process, examines the professional conduct or health of a registered nurse.
