  • Regulatory Body
    The Nursing Council of Vanuatu is established by the Nursing Council Act 1987.
    The functions of the Council are:
    • to arrange and regulate examinations and courses for the training of nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses and for persons wishing to be registered as nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses;
    • to register persons who are entitled to be registered as nurses, midwives or auxiliary nurses;
    • to keep in such a manner as it considers desirable a register for nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses;
    • to issue certificates and badges to nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses who have been registered under this Act;
    • to regulate and supervise the practice of nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses in Solomon Islands;
    • to ensure and promote proper professional conduct by nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses;
    • to exercise disciplinary control over nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses;
    • to approve training courses run by institutions for nurses, midwives and auxiliary nurses; and
    • to view matters related to the profession of nursing in the light of developments in technology, medical and nursing care for the benefit of patients and the nursing profession.
  • Health System
    Health care is free with five tiers of referrals in the health system. The primary point of entry is at the Nurse Aide Post. From the Nurse Aide post, a very sick patient is then referred to the Rural Health Clinic for a Registered Nurse to assess. The Registered Nurse treats the patient but if further attention is required, the Registered Nurse then refers the patient to the Area Health Centre. Then from the Area Health Centre the final referral stage is to the Provincial Hospital. If the Provincial Hospital is not able to offer the desired treatment then the patient is then referred to the National Referral Hospital when specialist treatment is available. Very difficult cases are referred to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney where the Solomon Islands has a ten-bed arrangement with the Australian Government.
