  • Regulatory Body
As the statutory authority, the Nursing Council of New Zealand governs the practice of nurses. The Council sets and monitors standards in the interests of the public and the profession. The Council's primary concern is public safety. In 2004, the legislation governing the Council changed from the Nurses Act 1977 to the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. http://www.nursingcouncil.org.nz/default.asp (accessed on 23.04.2009)
  • Health System
New Zealand provides universal health care to its citizens. The government bears ultimate responsibility for the payment for health care. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/nzopportunities/lifestyle/health/ (accessed on 23.04.2009).
In New Zealand hospitals are public and treat citizens or permanent residents free of charge and are managed by District Health Boards. At present government subsidies exist in health care. This system is funded by taxes. The New Zealand government agency PHARMAC subsidises certain pharmaceuticals depending upon their category.
