International Health Partnerships in Nursing for Health Equity
A Global Nursing Symposium to Build Collaboration Towards
Strengthened Results in Health Systems and Nursing

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa
July 4, 2009

Nurses around the world are increasingly showing leadership by supporting their peers in low- and middle-income countries challenged by weak health care systems, a high burden of disease and limited capacity to strengthen the nursing profession. By forging International Health Partnerships (IHPs) with their colleagues in education, research and practice, and by involving organizations engaged in issues of professionalism, social equity and public health, these nurses are creating opportunities to strengthen results through the sharing of expertise, resources and best practices both regionally and internationally.

You are invited to join a global nursing symposium planned to follow the 2009 International Council of Nurses Conference in Durban, South Africa. The symposium will explore IHP matters that relate to nursing and midwifery education, nursing-led research, practice environments, and complex networks and partnerships. Participants will engage in dialogue to identify mechanisms to strengthen overall outcomes and to foster the collaboration, information-sharing and networking that will help to support fruitful partnerships.

Proposed objectives

  • Identify key issues and priorities related to strengthening the collective role of the nursing profession in IHPs;
  • Explore mechanisms to enhance nursing education and research;
  • Examine strategies to develop synergies among international capacity-building initiatives;
  • Explore the role of collaboration and networking within the nursing profession to advance equity in health and health care.

The International Council of Nurses is the world's first and widest reaching international health professional organisation. As an independent, non-governmental federation of 129 national nurses' associations, ICN has been working since 1899 for the improvement of health services and recognition of the vital role of nursing in health care. Through its quadrennial congresses and conferences, ICN provides a forum for nurses, health professionals and others to share ideas affecting health and the nursing profession. The Democratic Nurses Organization of South Africa (DENOSA) is a voluntary organisation for nurses and nursing in South Africa. DENOSA protects, promotes, develops, empowers and supports nurses and midwives/accouters, to the benefit of nursing and health for all.
