General information

 

Overview

The ICN 24th Quadrennial Congress, its first in Africa, will showcase the key role nursing plays in leading the way to healthier nations. The Congress will permit access to and dissemination of nursing knowledge and leadership across specialities, cultures and countries. The three ICN pillars - Professional Practice, Regulation and Socio-economic Welfare - will frame the Congress sessions and programmes.

Featured plenary speakers will bring inspiration and the latest information on the nursing workforce and workplace, pandemics/disasters, ethics/human rights, clinical care and patient safety. Concurrent sessions, symposia and posters will address these issues plus developments in nursing education and the learning environment, advocacy, lobbying and legislation, care systems, technology, innovations and informatics, leadership and regulation. The Congress will also be the venue for ICN Network meetings, workshops and thought provoking main sessions - including a focus on task-shifting and the future of nursing.

To share your ideas and expertise you are invited to submit an abstract for a concurrent session, a symposium or a poster. The submission guidelines and abstract form will be available on the Congress website http://www.icn.ch/congress2009/abstracts.htm as of Monday, 17 March 2008.

The Council of National Representatives, ICN's global governing body, will convene from 27-30 June. Congress participants who are members of ICN member associations will be able to observe nursing leaders from all over the world identify the profession's priorities and future directions.

The main objectives of the Congress are:

1. To lead informed and sustainable improvement in policy and nursing practice
2. To demonstrate nursing's contribution to building healthier nations
3. To encourage leadership development in the health sector

 

 

ICN Networks

All ICN Networks will hold two-hour sessions, focusing on their specific areas of interest. Updates on the programme for these sessions will be available on the Congress website and through a series of media announcements. Areas of particular interest include:

General information

Bank and credit cards
Most banks are open Monday to Friday 09.00 - 15.30 hrs and Saturday from
08.30 – 11.00 hrs.
The following banks offer foreign exchange services: First National, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and ABSA. Various teller machines (ATM's) and foreign exchanges (Rennies and Thomas Cook) are found in every large town. Several international banks have branches in the main cities. The banks and the Bureau de change offer the best exchange rates, but it is also possible to change money at most hotel receptions.

Cancellation terms and conditions
Cancellations and Refunds for Registration
Written notification of cancellation and refund requests must be received before 15 April 2009 by the Congress Secretariat, Congrex Holland BV. The registration cancellation charge is EURO 75. No refunds will be given for registration cancellations received on 15 April 2009 or later. All refunds will be made after the Congress.

Certificate of attendance
Certificates of attendance will be provided free of charge to all registered participants as of Tuesday 30 June 2009.

Climate
Temperatures range from 16-25°C in winter (June to August) to 23-33°C in the summer months (November to March). It is recommended that you bring some warm clothes for the evenings, and a jacket or raincoat.

Congress venue
The Congress will be held at the International Convention Centre Durban. Centrally located and just a quarter of an hour from the airport, ICC Durban is minutes from hotels and beaches. Palm trees form a welcoming avenue while at the entrance to the centre three baobabs, Africa's tree giants, bid a regal greeting.

Continuing Education Credits (ICNEC) Congress participants will be able to earn international continuing nursing education credits (ICNECs) at this Congress.

Currency The unit of currency in South Africa is the South African Rand (code: ZAR and symbol: R). South Africa has a decimal currency system with one Rand equalling 100 cents. Denomination of Rand notes are R200, R100, R50, R20, and R10 and of the coins are R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c, and 1c.
The following exchange rates were applicable on 29 August 2008 :
1 British Pound = ZAR 14.07             
1 United States Dollar = ZAR 7.69
1 Euro = ZAR 11.34

Electricity
The electricity supply is 220-240 volts, 50 Hz. The connection for appliances is a round three-pin plug. The wall plugs are not comparable with Europe, US and the East; special adapters are available in most airport duty free shops.

Enjoying yourself in Durban
Durban is South Africa's most popular holiday spot and it's easy to see why. It has miles of soft sand, fantastic swimming beaches, great surfing and warm weather all year round. Located in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province and the city boasts an average of 320 days of sunshine a year. Temperatures range from 16-25°C in winter (June to August) to 23-33°C in the summer months (November to March). Durban also offers an exciting mix of design, art, music and food - peppered with fascinating cultural influences. Many events, cultures and nations have shaped Durban, and you'll find more than a dozen museums that tell its unique story.

A commercial and professional exhibition will run concurrently with the Congress. Industry and organisations will showcase their products and services and present the most recent health care information.

Professional visits
Congress participants will have the opportunity to learn about nursing practice and health care in the South African region. The Democratic Nurses Organization of South Africa (DENOSA) will be making special arrangements for professional visits. Further details will be posted on the Congress website as soon as available.

Refund/Cancellation
Registered participants who are unable to attend the Congress will have their paid fees refunded, less a processing fee, provided written notice of cancellation is received by the Congress Secretariat (c/o Congrex Holland, PO Box 302 1000 AH Amsterdam, the Netherlands // fax +31-20-5040225) before 15 April 2009. After this date, no fee refund can be expected. All refunds will be processed after the Congress.

Restaurant facilities
There are a few restaurants in Durban for all taste and flavours, please visit www.dining-out.co.za/Durban-Restaurant for the different restaurants and what they can offer.
Unfortunately there are no restaurants around the Congress venue except the Durban Hilton Restaurant and the coffee shop inside the convention centre.

Safety
Although Durban is not a metropolitan city like some of the other cities where the ICN Congress has been held, delegates are advised to take the usual safety precautions.
Accommodation
· Just like anywhere else in the world, please do not leave your luggage unattended.
· Store valuables in the safety deposit box at reception.
· Keep your room locked, whether you are in or out.
· If someone knocks, check who it is before opening the door.
At the Airport
· Always keep your bags where you can see them.
· If you feel uncomfortable with people around you, please go to the nearest security officers.

Taxis  
As a rule local taxis don’t drive around looking for passengers.
The information desk at the Congress venue or the reception desk in your hotel will be able to call a taxi for you when you require this service. Always ensure that the meter starts from zero.

Tips
Gratuities are expected in South Africa. A guideline for visitors is the following: Airport porters ZAR 5.00 per item, taxis 10%, waiters and waitresses in restaurants 10%.

Transportation and airport transfers
Durban is well served by several major international airlines and through the Johannesburg hub. Durban International Airport is situated ±25 km from the city centre.

Costs of a pre-booked and pre-paid transfer will be ZAR 150 per person (one way). This service will operate on the hour, from Durban International Airport to the appointed hotel in Durban city centre.

Transport Schedule

TRAVELLING to Durban
Important information before you depart to South Africa:

  • Please note that for entering South Africa, immigration requires that all visitors have a valid passport and at least two pages are needed to remain blank for the issuing of stamps. The passport also needs to be valid for the duration of the stay and six months after departure.
  • Be sure that you have a visa in case needed (see also visa information). No visas will be issued on the airport. To find out if you need a visa for South Africa and how to go about getting one, please visit the official South African Government visa website.

ARRIVING in South Africa
When Johannesburg is your airport of transfer to Durban please be sure that:

you have minimal 2.5 hours transfer time between your flights
you collect your luggage at the international arrival hall in Johannesburg and  process  through customs before making your way to the domestic departures area to recheck the luggage to Durban.
you use the official porters (in case preferred). You can recognize the porters  by their orange coats (price ZAR 5.00 per bag).

At the welcome desk staff and ICN volunteers will be will be able to help you to transit from International Arrivals to Domestic Departures in Johannesburg and in Durban with transportation from the Airport to your hotel.

An Airport shuttle service can be booked to take you to your accommodation. Date and time of arrival and the flight number are required when making this booking. Kindly go to the ICN 2009 welcome desk on arrival in Durban and the staff at the desk will direct you to the shuttle bus. This service is to be pre booked.
On departure the shuttle bus will collect you from either the hotel or the International Convention Centre. You can pre book this service or book at the Travel and Tours desk at the ICC. Booking form for airport transfers.

Visas As many countries have consolidated consular activities in certain regions, it is advisable to initiate the process for obtaining a visa early. Please check the following website at least 9 months before the conference to see whether you need a visa: www.home-affairs.gov.za/visa_detail.asp. and ensure that you make your application for a visa early enough.

The working languages of the Congress are English, Spanish and French. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided for all plenary sessions, as well as a selection of other sessions.
