About Hellenic NNA

The Hellenic National Nurses’ Association (ΗNNΑ) was founded in 1923 and became a member of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1929. It is a scientific and professional Association, which constitutes the voice of all Greek Nurses and represents them at national and international level. Its long history, its continuously developing activities and its stability guarantee the auspicious prospects of the Greek nursing.

The objectives of the Association, according to its constitution, are:

  • The promotion and the development of nursing as a science and as an art
  • The formation of criteria for exercising nursing profession
  • The representation of the profession, the documented free voice of opinion on matters concerning nursing profession
  • The participation of the profession in health policy making at local and national level
  • The representation of the profession in the international nursing field and its close co-operation with other international organizations
  • The unity and co-operation of all nurses for achieving solidarity among them, mutual understanding and support, cooperation for the solution of current nursing problems, promotion of the social status and authority of the nursing profession for the benefit of their moral, social and financial justifications as well as for the implementation of best practice in nursing.

At International level ΗNNΑ co-operates with:

  • The International Council of Nurses (ICN)
  • The European forum of National Nursing and Midwifery Associations and WHO (EFNNMA & WHO)
  • The European Federation of Nurses Associations (EFN)
  • The World Health Organization (WHO)
  • The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS)
  • The European Federation of Critical Care Nursing Association (EfCCNA)
  • The European Federation of Nurse Educators (FINE)
  • The International Labor Office (ILO)
  • The Federation of Occupational Health Nurses within the E.U. (FOHNEU)
  • The Paediatric Nursing Associations of Europe (PNAE)
  • The International Association of Paediatric Nurses (IAPN)

At National level the ΗNNΑ co-operates with the:

  • State Authorities
  • Professional Health Organizations
  • Trade Unions
  • Specialist nurses’  groups
  • Educational Institutes

There are 4 Regional Branches all over Greece under the ΗNNΑ umbrella. These Branches are autonomously functioning in co-operation, with the central administration of the HNNA

The ΗNNΑ establishes sectors for specialist nurses. The purpose for the creation of these sectors is the continuous professional development of their members as well as the discussion of common problems.

There are 8 sectors of specialist nurses, the sector of:

  • Οncology Nursing
  • Anaesthesiology Nursing
  • Nursing Administration
  • Emergency and Intensive Care Nursing
  • Nursing Education
  • Primary Health Care and Community Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Paediatric Nursing

The HNA organizes annually on May the Pan Hellenic Nursing Congress in Athens or in different cities around Greece. The Congress is mostly welcomed by nurses and student nurses. It also organizes various seminars, courses, workshops etc all year around.

It publishes quarterly the scientific nursing Journal “HELLENIC JOURNAL of NURSING”. It is the official scientific journal of the Hellenic National Nurses’ Association (ΗNNΑ), which has been published since 1962. Its contents and full abstracts are available in the Greek Medical Data Base “IATROTEK” (2002) and in International Databases “CINAHL” (2008), “EBSCO” (2009), as well as in “SCOPUS” (2010).

HELLENIC JOURNAL of NURSING is addressed to nurses of all specialties and to other health professionals as well. It also publishes, a monthly informative newsletter and a quarterly newsletter on “Emergency and Intensive Care Nursing”.

The HNNA awards annually 3 scholarships. It also provides a library for its members and student nurses.

Board of Directors

The Association is managed by a Council consisted of eleven (11) members elected by secret ballot every four (4) years. An Administrative Committee consisted of three (3) members is also elected by secret ballot every four (4) years.
