ICN Announces the Release of Version 1.1 of the
Geneva, Switzerland, 14 August 2008 –The International Council of Nurses today released Version 1.1 of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®), making it available electronically for worldwide dissemination. ICNP® is a unified nursing language system that facilitates the development and cross-mapping of local terms and existing terminologies. ICNP® is an integral part of the global information infrastructure informing health care practice and policy to improve patient care worldwide. ICNP® Version 1.1 follows the 2005 publication of Version 1.0. The new version updates the 2005 release and includes a new browser and new content. The new, more user-friendly browser is available on the ICN website. The new content includes ICNP® catalogue pre-coordinated statements for nursing diagnoses, interventions and outcomes. ICNP® catalogues are subsets of the terminology that facilitate software developers and nurses working in a specialty area (e.g. community nursing) or a focus area of nursing (e.g. promoting adherence to treatment), to more readily integrate ICNP® into practice. The release of ICNP® Version 1.1 is web-based. Along with the 7-Axis Model representation through the browser, other representations of the new version are available from the ICNP® Programme, including ontology files. Nurses (clinicians, informaticists, educators, administrators, researchers) and other users (e.g. informatics experts and technicians, vendors) may contact the ICNP® Programme for the representations that are most relevant for their preferred use. Judith Oulton, ICN's Chief Executive Officer, praised the new version and its accessibility, noting: “ICN is excited to share this new ICNP® Version 1.1 with nurses and others across the globe. We also want to acknowledge the many contributions of nurses and others who have made ongoing contributions to development and testing of Version 1.1. ICN is committed to making nursing visible in healthcare data and to advancing the quality of nursing care through ongoing development and use of this unified nursing terminology." ICNP® Programme note: Anyone who intends to work with ICNP® in any capacity must sign a Use Agreement with the ICNP® Programme. See www.icn.ch/icnp_permission.htm for further information on using ICNP®. _________________________________ Editor’s note The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a federation of 133 national nurses' associations representing the millions of nurses worldwide.
