  • 10 October is World Mental Health Day: This year, the theme we raise awareness on is “Mental health in the work place”. This is a particularly relevant topic for the nursing profession, where long hours, pressure, responsibility and psychological demands are a daily feature. These issues are exacerbated by short staffing policies, back-to-back shifts, the occurrence of violence from patients and budget cuts that limit equipment and increase workplace hazards.Nurses are faced with challenges unique to their position within the health care workforce and because they constitute its backbone as its largest proportion of professionals, it is vital that institutions and governments respond with policies that protect and preserve their physical and mental health. On World Mental Health Day, ICN recognises the need to support nurses’ mental wellbeing.  The ICN Wellness Centres for health care workers and their families is just one example of how ICN recognises the value of nurses and cares for the carers.
