      • World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August:  ICN strongly advocates breastfeeding for the well-being of both mother and infant.  The first six months of infant life are a period of rapid growth and development.  Breast milk contains optimum nutrition and adapts to meet the baby’s changing needs. Colustrum, the milk that mothers produce in the first few days after delivery, is rich in protein, minerals and vitamins and helps protect babies against infections, illnesses and allergies. Breast milk is easy for babies to digest and provides close contact between mother and child.  It calms the baby and steadies his or her breathing.  There is also strong evidence that a lower risk of developing obesity may be directly related to breastfeeding. For more on breastfeeding, see ICN’s fact sheet on Maternal and Infant Nutrition.
